To kick off 2025, Instagram unveiled a set of updates that significantly impact how users engage with content on the app. From ratio updates and longer Reels to an algorithm reset (finally!), editing app, and more, these changes reflect shifting social media trends and user preferences.
If you manage social media accounts for clients, create content, or showcase your business on IG, here’s what you need to know about Instagram’s recent updates.
Ratio Updates
Chances are, you’ve noticed that your feed no longer consists of 4:4 squares. Posts must now be uploaded in 1080 x 1350px sizing (4:5 ratio), while the profile grid displays a 1080 x 1440px sizing (3:4 ratio). This change intends to better display portrait-oriented content.
If you’ve been thinking about buying a set of templates for Posts in our Etsy shop, don’t worry! We’ve already updated our offerings to reflect this new sizing.
Three-Minute Reels
Reel length has been extended from 90 seconds to three minutes — a direct response to creator feedback and frustration with previous time constraints. This new length allows for more detailed and engaging storytelling without the need to break content into multiple videos. it also allows for more monetization opportunities for those users and brands who use Reels for marketing campaigns.
But wait, that’s not all! Users can add text directly to Reel covers, offering further customization for grid thumbnails. Additionally, IG now supports layering multiple audio tracks within a single Reel. Plus, you can fade music in or out.
Algorithm Reset
Does your Instagram feed show you the content you want to see? If not, this new feature could be a game-changer for you! Head to our recent Instagram post for a step-by-step video tutorial. Note that your feed may feel a bit off at first as the app relearns your interests and preferences.
Scheduled Direct Messages
If you use IG for business purposes, this update’s for you! Instagram now allows users to schedule direct messages in advance, a feature aimed at improving communication planning. DMs have been notoriously tricky for many users to manage, so this scheduling feature is a huge improvement for connecting with your followers.
The updates listed above are currently live — but Instagram has even more changes in store! Here’s what’s coming next.
Story Highlights in Feed
Story Highlights are getting a makeover! Instead of appearing as buttons above your grid, they will be housed within your feed as another tab, allowing for a less cluttered profile. Many users are already pushing back on this shift, claiming it makes Story Highlights harder to access. Time will tell if this upcoming change sticks around!
Edits App
Instagram plans to launch a new app for editing, simply called Edits. It will offer advanced editing tools for Posts, Stories, and Reels, including AI-powered captions, animations, and smart filters. It will also make it easier than ever to integrate text and voice-over capabilities into your Reels. Better yet, users will be able to directly share their content to Instagram and other social media platforms. The Edits app is already available for pre-order on iOS.
